—ISM November 2022: Kyuri Lim
Name: Kyuri Lim
Nationality: South Korean
High School: Oxtand International School in Shenzhen; The Korean International School in Shenzhen
Year of Entry: 2019
Major and School: Professional Accountancy, School of Management and Economics
College: Diligentia
Kyuri Lim, who majored in Professional Accountancy, is now in her final year at the School of Management and Economics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen). Despite being ethnically 100% South Korean, Kyuri moved to Shenzhen with her parents at the age of nine and speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. Spending most of her life in China and attending international schools, she “always wondered what it feels like to study in Korea as a Korean student at a Korean university”. So she decided to spend the spring semester in 2022 as an exchange student at Korea University, one of the 131 universities around the world that formed a partnership with CUHK-Shenzhen.

The jewel of her memory as an exchange student is attending the Great Granite Tower Festival. It is an annual festival held in May since 1962 to celebrate Korea University’s establishment. She was very moved by the IPSELENTI Cheering Festival, when everyone wore the Korea University T-shirts and cheered.

Kyuri discovered that the professors teaching accounting at the host university had all been veterans of the local accounting industry before. The experience they shared through teaching gave her much guidance when she searched hard for internship opportunities in Seoul. It took her nearly half a year to land on an internship position at Ernst & Young. She thought she stood out among more than fifty competitors because of her English abilities and cultural awareness. “All interns are Korean, but I was the only one who had studied overseas.” She worked with another three interns in a team and helped prepare for the mid-year audit report. She found it challenging at the beginning because all accounting terminologies were in Korean, while she was more familiar with an English working environment, as English is the main teaching medium at CUHK-Shenzhen. However, with her teammates’ help, she quickly became familiar with the terms and even took the opportunity to brush up on her Korean. She also had her first taste of Korean office culture. “My co-workers work hard during office hours and maintain a life-and-work balance. I got paid if I had to work overtime.”

Looking back at her study-abroad and internship experience in Korea, Kyuri commented, “After living in Shenzhen for twelve years, I wanted to find my identity, so I went on an exchange program in Korea. In the end, I found myself both comfortable in Korea and China. When I flew back to Shenzhen, I felt I was going home. Studying abroad was a great decision in my life. I met many friends all over the world. We exchanged information on career opportunities, and it stimulated our potential.”

Kyuri returned to CUHK-Shenzhen this September. She plans to move to Hong Kong after graduation next year. As a CUHK-Shenzhen graduate, Kyuri enjoys a two-year work visa in Hong Kong according to Hong Kong’s latest visa scheme of attracting young talents. When looking for jobs there, she will also prepare for the Hong Kong CPA (Certified Public Accountants) examination to be registered as a public accountant. Since the Professional Accountancy major at CUHK-Shenzhen is an Accredited Degree Program by Hong Kong Institution of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), Kyuri feels lucky that she will be exempted from its examination on ten basic courses.
