Sensor or control system data is fed from the physical asset to the Digital Twin in real time.
The Digital Twin has physics models, engineering know-how and data analytics built in.
This lets you predict the future performance, and maintenance needs.
We decided to build digital twin of the Arduino Bradshaw robotic arm, we then built it and reverse engineered it so that we had a digital model in Ansys SpaceClaim.
At the same time we started the development of our IT platform in PTC ThingWorx. The 3d model was then exported from SpaceClaim to Ansys Mechanical where a finite element model was made. The Ansys Twin Builder extension Dynamic ROM Builder was used to generate a dynamic ROM - a reduced order model of the robotic arm.
Various sensor are applied to the physical asset, like accelerometers, strain gauges.
That data will be fed into the Digital Twin to make them behave identically.
Now we are able to connect the physical assets to the reduce or model in the IoT platform. We used PTC's vuforia to create an AR app both for tablet but also for Hololens use. We can begin to understand the physical performance over time and monitor properties such as stress, accumulated damage or other things of interests. The next step is to apply more advanced analytics to understand the future behavior of the asset.
